New York City

Being born in New York City and later living there to work at an internet start-up, my expectation from day one was that people in my life would come from all different backgrounds and that was to be celebrated.

Rio de Janeiro

The understanding that people take different approaches to life was cemented for me when I lived in Rio de Janeiro with my family. I began to learn to interpret and respect other’s styles, beliefs, and expectations according to what it meant to them, to see it through their lens.

South Carolina

I learned a lot about identity, prejudice, and empowerment growing up in Columbia, South Carolina. I am grateful for the ways in which these life experiences helped to shape my sense of justice, inclusion, and worldview.

Mexico City

Spending time with Mexican friends and living in Mexico City reinforced the values I was forming already: to notice differences, and to seek to understand and respect them in others, as opposed to being threatened by or judging them. I would also realize many years later how important it was for me to have the powerful experience of being a non-native speaker of the language.

Massachusetts

I spent my teen years, went to university and graduate school, and eventually settled in Massachusetts to raise my own family. I was always keenly aware of the regional cultural differences within countries and even states (provinces/counties/prefectures). I learned never to underestimate the relevance of individual, organizational, regional, and national cultural norms.

United Kingdom

My curiosity and love of learning led me to work in a unique corporate culture in London. I experienced vastly different, yet highly effective, leadership styles amongst my direct leadership, an important foundational experience for my career.

Japan

Living and working in Japan for years was the ultimate growth experience. I learned the importance of reflection and learning from my mistakes. From humbling culture shock I learned deep self-awareness and began to understand how I needed to adapt my approach and style to behave differently when I crossed cultures in order to have the impact I wanted to have. This period in my career set the tone for my life's work and the ability to enable my clients to build awareness and leverage these critical skills.

Toronto

I appreciate the ongoing professional development and joy I get from working with clients and colleagues from all over the world. I have especially enjoyed my work in Toronto over many years. Through it I have been reminded of the importance, for native speakers of the same language from different countries, to remain aware that their cultures (values, beliefs, norms, assumptions) will often differ greatly. I am grateful for the additional layers of insight and learning I gain from each conversation, relationship, and program.
